You are what you make.
Cocke County has a rich history of quality and craftsmanship. Some businesses have called Cocke County home for more than 100 years. Agribusiness, plastics and injection molding and artisan products are important industry segments. Others include logging and raw materials, flooring and lumber and logistics and distribution. Because of the county's exceptional natural resources, companies that cater to outdoor and adventure activities are also a growing segment.
ConAgra, one of the largest packaged food companies in the U.S., has been in Cocke County since the late 1800s (as Van Camp). They have chosen to remain in Newport because of its trained workforce and easy access to the rest of the world. Many of their ingredients arrive in the county by rail and eventually make their way into 88 percent of all households in the nation as well as to international markets. As the largest employer in Cocke County, ConAgra provides over 500 jobs and is an active participant in community events.
Phoenix Closures specializes in injection molding closures and lids used in packaging vitamins, food, personal care products, cosmetics and more. The Naperville, Illinois, company chose Newport for its new plant in 2005 due in part to its proximity to I-40. The corporate culture is based on continually improving and providing the highest level of excellence, which they've demonstrated by recently investing $15 million in expanding the Cocke County plant.
